*sigh*

Ok, so I haven't heard from the Deacon yet, who is supposed to call me soon about the whole He or She fiasco. That should be interesting.

But, I called my parish to talk about our convalidation again and I'm still confused. She said we could wait until Kyle is baptized/confirmed and then do it, or I could get a dispensation to marry outside of the Church, and we would get his sacrament once he's officially Catholic. Um, ok? I told her I'd like to do it as soon as possible and that I wanted the priest to do it, not the Deacon...

I'm not sure why I thought this process would be easy. The process could take as long as normal marriage prep, so even if we started the process now, I might not even need a dispensation because he'll be Catholic in 6 mos.

Sigh.

  1. I'm not an expert, but it seems like your parish coordinator is giving you the following two options:

    1. Wait until Kyle gets his Sacraments of Initiation (baptism, First Eucharist, Confirmation) and then marry in the Church, or

    2. Get a dispensation from the bishop to marry a non-Christian (since he's not baptized, he'd be considered a non-Christian) in the Church and get married in the Church right away; your marriage would be valid but not sacramental. It would become sacramental once Kyle got his Sacraments of Initiation.

I guess it really depends on how long it'd take to get the dispensation to marry a non-Christian. I could ask my friend Joe, if you want (he's the marriage/baptism/nullity coordinator at our parish).

  2. Yeah, either way, we'd have to take marriage prep classes if the priest says we have to. He can waive them, I guess, but she said it isn't guaranteed he will. So, either way, it'll take a while I guess.

  3. We just finished a marriage prep session and all but one of the couples were those who'd been married outside the Church and now wanted to convalidate their marriages. (The one couple who weren't in that situation were elderly widowers - and they still had to do marriage prep, too!) Our sessions are only 6 weeks, though, not 6 months.

  4. That gives me hope. I need to call and speak to our pastor, not the secretary. Lol... So hard to make phone calls with all these loud kiddos!! :)
