I have heard some pretty ridiculous arguments and statements since becoming a Catholic... Here are some of my favorites. (I'm paraphrasing, but these arguments can be found anywhere.)

"The Vatican holds the truth in their vaults and it should be shared with the public!! They shouldn't be allowed to keep it secret from the masses."

Pardon me while I laugh.

So, you are anti-Catholic. You believe the Church is evil, but you also believe that they have all the truth in their vaults? Why yes, yes they do... Do you not quite get what you're saying? If they have had scholars, scientists, theologians, etc throughout the ages studying these scrolls, and deciding what is important to share, and these truths are truths as you say, then you should be following the Church, because obviously they hold an authority and expertise that no one else holds. Hello? Besides that, these things are thousands of years old. Is it really a great idea to have every single thing out in a museum?

"Catholics have more books in their Bible! That's wrong!"

Hmmm, seeing as the Catholic Church compiled the Bible and Protestants took out the books, isn't really that you are missing books of the Bible, not that we have added some to your Bible? Why are these people on the Church's case about something they did? I don't get this one.

"If I ever thought someone was possessed, I'd call the Catholic Church, they seem to be good with that stuff."

Ya think?

"Catholics are told not to read the Bible!"

Hmmm, that must be why we have Bible readings every single day to reflect on and pray about. Right.

Ok, so there are plenty more, and I'm not good at apologetics, but come on.... Does anyone see the logical disconnect here?

Also, speaking of Anti-Catholicism, there is a movement starting called "Occupy the Vatican." There is a Facebook page that has over 3500 followers. This page is FULL of lies about the Church, hate speech, threats of violence, and other horrible things. It's really, really scary. Please, take action, go to the FB group and report them and read through some of the vile comments there and report those too. But at very least, report the page. It's easy to do.

  1. The "extra" books are all historical books, just not canonical. We have a book with the Apocryphal writings in it on our shelf because it is history, it's important.

The only two questions I have about Catholicism are purgatory (if you're going to Heaven anyway, why do you have to wait in purgatory?) and the praying to Mary. I guess I don't really understand why you have to go to confession either.

I'm not anti-Catholic, pretty much half my family is Catholic, I just don't understand some of the concepts.

  2. Yeah, but not all non Catholics are like you. They're convinced we have extra books and shouldn't. I'm not sure why they can't read up on that history there...

Thanks for asking! Thanks to the internet, I can easily explain those points through good links. :)

    Mary: http://www.ourcatholicfaith.org/prayingtomary.html

Jesus on the cross told the apostles, "Behold your mother." We do not worship Mary, we venerate her, as the greatest mother out there, the Mother of Jesus. She deserves respect, don't you think? :)

    Purgatory: http://www.ourcatholicfaith.org/purgatory.html

    Confession: http://www.ourcatholicfaith.org/teaching-confession.html

If those links are too much, and you still have questions, let me know. I'm not good at this type of thing, but I can point you in the right direction. There are also tons of podcasts you could listen to online, if that's easier, too. :)

  3. I will check those out soon, thanks!
